Is Winter Bird Feeding Important?
Winter bird feeding can be very important to birds, especially on colder days. Some birds lose a large amount of body weight each night just burning calories trying to stay warm. The distance a bird roosts at night to your feeder may be much less than the distance to the nearest natural food source. Thus, getting food at your feeder can help a weakened bird get the nourishment it needs to recover and regain the weight it needs to get through the next cold night. On days when snow covers natural food sources, the food at your feeder is appreciated even more.
Did you know that Chickadees have been known to hide thousands of sunflower seeds in the bark of trees near where they roost on cold nights so they will have a close supply of readily available food when they wake up?
Winter Bird Feeding Tip: Whenever a storm is in the forecast, fill a spare feeder and put it in the garage ready to go. Then you can bring it out during the storm or after, and not have to deal with filling a snowy or ice covered feeder.
