Bird Walk Reports by Christine B.

Results of the September bird walk

Five birders traveled to Fountain Creek Nature Center and Regional Park for the monthly bird walk on September 13, 2008 . The day started out cool, but clear and sunny, quickly warming up. Although on the tail-end of the warbler and other small songbird migration season, a number of warblers and flycatchers were spotted adding “lifers” to nearly everyone’s bird list. In particular, one large cottonwood tree teamed with Wilson ’s Warblers, Yellow Warblers and at least one Warbling Vireo. The cattails around the one pond offered a quick view of a Common Yellowthroat and longer views of a Green Heron. In total, twenty-four species were spotted.

 Wilson’s Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Warbling Vireo
Osprey (flying over head)
Robin
Eastern Kingbird (offering great views as it “hawked” for insects)
Yellow-headed Blackbird
Red-winged Blackbird
European Starling
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser
Double-crested Cormorant
Belted Kingfisher
Flycatcher (Not further identified)
Wren (Not further identified, but probably a House Wren)
Black-crowned Night Heron (both one adult and one juvenile)
Mallard
Canada Goose
House Finch
Barn Swallow
Black-capped Chickadee

Blue Jay (heard only)

In addition, turtles occupied many of the logs in the ponds and several white-tail deer were seen, including some fawns still slightly spotted.
